This website is dedicated to the Florentine aritist, Pontormo, who was originally named Jacopo Carrucci. He broke away from High Renaissance classicism to create a more personal, expressive style that is classified as early Mannerism. He was primarily a religious painter, but he also painted a number of portraits and mythological subjects for specific patrons, such as the Medici family. Pontormo's  keen sensitivity and profound feeling for the states of the human mind introduced an insightful dimension to the meaning of portraiture, expressing the sitter's outer image while suggesting his inner life. Pontormo's hallmarks of his Mannerist syle include: psychic energy over physicality, beautiful linear rhythms, restless movement, ambiguous space, and vivid colors.
